History and Cultural Heritage
The history of Ajdovščina dates back to Roman times when around 270 AD, the Roman fortress Castra Ad Fluvium Frigidum was built. This was part of the Roman defensive system Claustra Alpium Iuliarum. This military camp served as a road station on the route from Italy to Pannonia and the Balkans. The remains of the Roman walls and towers are still visible in the town today.
In the Middle Ages, Ajdovščina became an important market settlement. It was first mentioned in 1507 when it received market rights from Maximilian I. Over the centuries, the area experienced the rule of the Patriarchs of Aquileia, the Counts of Gorizia, the Republic of Venice, the Habsburgs, and the Italians. In 1945, Ajdovščina became the location of the first Slovenian government established after World War II.
