Bohinj

Bohinj

Bohinj is a peaceful green paradise oasis with untouched mountains - a tourist destination that has not yet been captured by mass tourism.

Bohinj is a large open basin - a valley with the largest natural lake in Slovenia, surrounded by the Julian Alps and in the heart of one of the oldest national parks in Europe, the Triglav National Park with the highest mountain Triglav. The English writer Agatha Christie, who also visited Bohinj several times, wrote: "Bohinj is to beautiful for murder scene!"

On the Slovenia360 portal you can see 360 aerial panoramas of locations in Bohinj: Ribčev Laz, Studor, Stara Fužina. You can take a virtual walk on tourist spots and hotels. Here you can also make a reservation in connection with the Booking.com system (no commission).

The “first-class” photo location  you will find by Lake Bohinj (Ribčev Laz), near the Church of St. John the Baptist - built before 1300 (the Romantic period, later equipped with a Baroque altar). The Church of St. John the Baptist is the largest cultural monument in Bohinj, and the location by the lake, surrounded by the Julian Alps, is the most beautiful viewpoint of Bohinjs´ natural pearls.

The inhabitants of Bohinj have always lived mainly from pastures and consequently with cheese-making crafts. Bohinj cheese is preserved from generation to generation and it is called mohant cheese - with a characteristic aroma, protected at the European level - a local culinary specialty and a specialty for gourmets. Some might think it's rotten cheese :).

In the summer, cattle were grazed by shepherds (herdsmen) in the mountains, and in the valleys the cut grass was dried to feed livestock in the winter. The drying of the grass took place in hayracks - toplars, which are still preserved in all their unique idyllic appearance - which is also a Slovenian landmark and at the same time an exceptional cultural heritage of the countryside. An exceptional photo location is a group of hayracks - toplars (also called stacks) in the village of Studor - under the rugged lookout mountain Studor from where there is a charming idyllic view of Lake Bohinj.

Lake Bohinj is the largest natural glacial flowing lake in Slovenia (length 4,100 m, width 1,200 m, maximum depth 45 m). It is home to many species of algae and fish. In summer, the water on the surface heats up to 22 degrees Celsius, and sometimes in winter it freezesand you can skate on ice. Lovers of water activities in nature will come at their own expense when it is warm, as you can swim, surf, ride a boat, kayak or canoe in the lake, dive or fish. You can take a cruise on the boat and take unforgettable panoramic photos. There is also an idyllic promenade along the lake.

Savica Waterfall is very special and famous on a global scale - it is a spectacular waterfall, falling into the precipices of the Komarča mountain - accessible to every tourist. The 78-meter-high waterfall originates at the break of a steep wall and empties into Lake Bohinj (called Savica). There are 5 species of fish living in the Savica River: brown trout, rainbow trout, grayling, tusk and chub. Savica Waterfall is one of the natural wonders of the world and is an exceptional photo location that you simply must visit!

At Lake Bohinj, enter the panoramic gondola, which takes you to the "panoramic" Vogel, interesting in all seasons with views of the Julian Alps and Triglav (severe photo location!) In summer, Vogel is a scenic mountain with a starting point for hiking tours Slovenian alpine ski resort with a trail that leads to the foothills.

Pokljuka, another mountain pearl, a plateau at the edge of the Triglav National Park, covered with pastures and an extremely high spruce forest. Pokljuka is an ideal starting point for many mountain trails in the highlands of the Julian Alps.

The thick snow cover on Pokljuka enables and offers well-kept cross-country trails between spruce forests and is also recognizable after hosting international biathlon competitions. The tourist destination Pokljuka has accommodation within hotels and a modern biathlon center.
